Snip, snip

It was a big day.

Who woulda thought I'd be the kind of mom who could so easily let her child's first haircut occur? Actually, I struggled with the idea of a haircut, but the mullet, curly sidelocks and combover were, combined, a little much on her precious head. You see, her newborn hair never totally fell out and as her actual hair started to come in, the odd lengths of her newborn hair were only accentuated. And when Lane started to make fun of her hair, I knew something had to be done (if he's making fun of it, you gotta know that other less-connected people are doing the same).

So we cut her hair at my mom's. I was going to do it in our house, but several problems arose.

First: The Scissor Problem.
We have two pairs of scissors in this house. One is for food. The other is for everything else -- paper, flower stems, Cosmo's hair -- there was no way I was letting those near my baby's head.
My mom, on the other hand, has a special set of scissors specifically for hair. I recall several times in my youth hearing my mother's voice loft into the family room rightfully accusing one of us of using her special hair (or fabric) scissors for a menial task like paper cutting. That was a big no-no. I always tried to play off the scissor misuse like I didn't REALIZE I had the hair-cutting scissors. Apparently, I was confused and thought the pair hidden in my mother's bathroom were the same as the multiple dull pairs sitting in plain sight near the desk area. How could I confuse these two?

Second: The Delicate Maneuvering of Cutting a Baby's Hair.
It took several people. As one photo shows, there was me holding Jane, my Mom cutting hair, my sister Julia holding Jane's head still and Lane snapping the monumental day's photos.

Perhaps you can't tell the difference between pre-cut and post-cut. I can.

This really made me laugh. THe first time cut Luke's hair, he was squirming so much that Erik just gave up. He had really short on one side and long on the other side for a whole month! Good thing he is really blond and it was hard to tell.

Ahhhh ... the first haircut! I would feel the same way ... no way I would trust my inept scissor-wielding fingers near my baby's head! lol
