It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

(alternate headline: Parenthesises Central)
It's October 1, my friends, and you know what that means.

I can officially (in my book) put out the Halloween decorations. And, per the rule from my childhood, as soon as it rains after today's date, I can start playing Christmas music (although I've fibbed a little, but I'm and adult, so it's OK, right? And P.S., Katie, the dance we do to David Foster's orchestra song, it must be genetic because without ever showing her, Jane started doing the dance. It was AWE-some).

It's the beginning of the triple whammy (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas). Thank heavens my birthday is not around this time. I am violently protective of celebrations.

In anticipation of today, I made pumpkin cookies last night (and no, I didn't eat them all, although I could have ... I sent the majority with Lane to his office):

And put them in my new pumpkin cookie jar from Crate and Barrel:

I hung my fabulous Fall wreath and then, so it wouldn't feel so lonely (and stupid on its too-short wreath hook) I put a pumpkin on the porch (with many, many more to follow with the cutest concept of carrot-nose pumpkins, be still my heart).

And then I assembled the big unveiling of the new Halloween tradition.

Last month, I went away for a craft retreat weekend. I don't scrapbook, so instead I made a kind-of Halloween advent calendar. Think of the 12 Days of Christmas. Now change that to 13 (since the number is spooky) for Halloween. Behind each decoration hung on the chicken-wired frame is an activity to complete in anticipation of Halloween. For example, Day 1 tells us to go to an apple orchard. Day 11 tells us to howl at the moon and Day 7 has us picking out our pumpkins -- things of this nature -- all leading up to Trick-or-Treating on Day 13.
POST EDIT: To see where I got the idea, go here. She posts the instructions of Creating Keepsakes article on the craft, as well as some of her own adaptations.

I'm overly excited. And that reminds me, I need to get a copy of Hocus Pocus.

Love the calendar. Very cute. I officially put up Halloween 2 days ago...I knew if I waited for the weekend I would have to wait till next week.

I love the calendar! I think that just might be another craft that I need to add to my list. I too have been anxiously awaiting for the 1st to start the decoration process.

Hocus Pocus! Katie Larsen and I would always watch that around Halloween. I think I, too, need to locate a copy.

Ah, I love, LOVE this time. I need to get my decorations out, too. Not to mention some candles. Thanks for reminding me. :)

I am totally stealing your Halloween advent calendar idea when Lydia gets older :) Such a great thing! I love Halloween season too, in fact, I am bursting over my creativity on this year's costumes. More on my blog on that later.
