Into the Attic

Two weeks before Christmas, Jane made a startling discovery whilst flipping through the Target toy ad: There were such things as Barbies.

And then, oh my! How the Barbie requests came in.

I would hear every 5 minutes how she so desperately needed a Barbie. Walking through the store, she would finger each and every one declaring them all necessities.

I knew this phase would not pass lightly in the night.

I mean, heavens, I think I played with Barbies well into 6th grade. (Was that too old to be playing with Barbies? Oh well, I loved them.)

She got one Barbie from her great-grandmother, but her new Barbie needed friends! She needed the change of clothes!

All of this was said pleadingly. No demands. All "Please, Mommy. Please." or "Santa will bring it to me." (Such faith.)

I cringed in fear. I certainly wasn't going to give into demands and let her think she could have whatever she wanted, but I feared my sanity with the constant requests.

And then a stroke of brilliance.

All my old Barbies. All my old clothes. All my old accessories. They were all safe and stored at my mother's house.

While I know she will not (and does not) get everything she wants, this I could do.

The day before we left my parents, my Mom pulled out the Barbie boxes and I went through them.

Since my sisters' and my Barbies were intermingled over the years, I took only the Barbies and clothing I was most certain belonged to me once upon a time.

Jane is in heaven.

So is her brother.

And the most popular Barbie?

My very first: Bride Barbie and Groom Ken. I got those two, complete with silver Corvette, when I requested a GI Joe for Christmas.

And I loved them as much as Jane does.

I was SUCH a Barbie fan as well! In fact, I also had the silver Corvette. Fantastic. I'm so glad Jane is enjoying them and what a stroke of brilliance to pull out your old dolls. I hope mine are still at my mom's house for Lydia one day.

How fun that your Mom saved those for you all those years. I bet there was a flood of memories that came back as you were looking through those.

Rachel, I write here so you won't miss it. In your last post you referred to talents. I want to remind you of the talent you have in writing and also very much in capturing the moment and feelings through your photos in your blog. It makes mom and feel as if we were there enjoying the moment. This is a talent you have along with your sisters and Otis not one to forget or belittle through any comparison. You do marvelously.
