Everything but nunchuck skills

I have grown tired of answering with a simple and lonely "reading" to the common question, "So what are your hobbies? What do you do all day?" (I can no longer say running and the answer "compulsive cleaning" doesn't exactly paint me as the non-crazy person people would like to get to know.)

So, I decided to tap into my family's extensive bank of creative knowledge and learn new skills. All of these skills, of course, require membership into the JoAnn's or Michael's clubs.

One of my new favorites is to crochet around the edge of baby blankets or burp rags. My mother and sister Diana taught me this skill.

Of course, I did the burp cloth to the left and Diana, who has a far better hand at this skill, did the blanket to the right.

The greatest family talent of all? Sewing. My mother (greatest seamstress on Earth) and all of my sisters have this talent ... I on the other hand was not patient enough to learn. Until yesterday. Being the magnanimous soul that she is, my sister Julia sat me down and taught me the fundamentals. With a tiny bit of help on my end, she and I made this blanket yesterday for Jane:

Is that not the cutest thing you've ever seen? You really need to see it IRL. It has the soft cuddly fabric on the back. (I sewed the parts that didn't need a steady and experienced hand ... Julia did all the cool stuff.)

So now I'm off to borrow one of my Mom's four sewing machines and practice. If I have half the talent that my genetics would suggest, then I should be able to piece together a dress or two for the baby.

So funny ... and boy does that sound so familiar! My mom has like 6 sewing machines!!! It's crazy! She is the sewing queen and has more fabric than is humanly possible.

And no, I don't have a fraction of the talent my mom does, either! Dang it!

So that totally reminds me of my sewing project in jr. high ... I was making this great dress for a project. Anyway I was nearly done and was surging all my seams ... And ... I surged a HUGE hole in the bodice!! IDIOT! Miraculously my teacher took pity on me and gave me something like a B on it. I took it home and my mom just shook her head. I had also screwed up the sleeves... two rights instead of a left and a right. My mom worked some serious magic, put a "pocket" patch over the hole and gave it a belt to cover my sloppy waistline. I actually wore it to my grandparents 60th wedding anniversary!

I am NOT a seamstress!! LOL

Jane is a lucky girl - she's going to have some super cute stuff waiting for her. My tip...don't forget to use it. I never used the cute stuff I had because I was afraid of getting it dirty and messed up, but then the kids grow so fast and I realized the stuff never got used.

"Beautiful & crafty. What a catch!" ... I thought we were talking about Rachel, not Lane. Zing! Way to go Lane...and everybody else made fun of you for being labeled "most likely to be beautiful and crafty" in your Senior Yearbook! This goes out to all of them!

These items are so beautiful. Your sister, Julia, is so talented. I read her blog as well, and I can't get over how precious their family. She's like another Martha Stewart, I swear. Anyways, when exactly is baby Jane due? I want to know the date for sure. Email me would ya. I love y'all so much!
