Reading Rainbow

Recently, I started worrying that I was not properly encouraging Jane's mental development. Yes, I realize she is 7 weeks old, but I realized I only had THREE children's books ... and two were mine as a child (thank you Hillary for her Olivia book).

So, I went out and used some store credit to ramp up the volume of child-friendly books in our home. Then I got home and realized -- I have no idea when you are supposed to start reading to your child. Can anyone help me? We read House of Mirth together, but I mean reading books for her enjoyment.

On another reading note, I miss book clubs. Can I start one? There are so many special interest groups at church, I don't know if people could swallow another one. And if I did start one and no one showed up, I would feel (only slightly) like a failure. It's tragic that I don't have more than three friends in the area.

So any ideas on how to satiate (besides the library's book club) my desire for a book club?

I've always heard you're supposed to start reading to them in the womb. Although our newest is 3 months and I don't think I've read him a book yet. Although I did catch my oldest reading a book to him on her own the other day because we'd told her that reading to your baby helped make them smart and she wants her baby brother to be smart. Way to pick up her parents' slack.

Go for starting a book club. I started one here in Kansas when we moved her a couple years ago and figured no one would come. I just talked about it some and it turned out a lot of people wanted to join a book club and now we have this huge group. I'd invite you to join my online book club I once had going, but it's sort of died.

Isn't House of Mirth a bit depressing for a 7 week old? haha! When my niece was born I bought her a baby LeapPad book reader thing that she loved. They don't make the books for them anymore, though! BUMMER! Anyway, she LOVES LOVES "stories" and I'm pretty sure my brother started reading to her when she was pretty young. So why not start now! Just maybe stay away from Edith Wharton for now.
As for the book club ... have you checked out the site GoodReads.com It's not as good as an actual club, but kind of fun to invite people to join and see what they're reading.

Uhm...wow...way to make a brother-in-law feel like he's nothing. Apparently the children's book I gave you & Jane wasn't good enough?! But hey, that's alright, let's give Hillary all the credit here. She's great. Me?! Well, I'm apparently quite forgettable. Feel free to mail me back "I Went For a Walk" so I can give it to somebody that will appreciate it. Ouch...

Hi Rach! My little girl loves to read books and especially loves to have me read to her. I can't really remember when we started reading to her, but it was early. I would start when she is a little bit bigger though. Maybe three or four months....even though she will have no idea what you are talking about, the pretty colors in the book and your animated voice will be great for her.

My ward has a book club. I bet you could get one rolling if you suggested it to your Relief Society President. Love you!

What a book is? Just watch TV. I am totally kidding. YOu should try to forms a book club with your 3 friends but have them each bring a friend or 3.

I was just reading through Trevor's baby journal and I had noted that he was turning his own pages, or at least intentionally trying, at 8 months. Austin has been really enjoying books for the past 2 months. Whenever I read to Trevor, Austin cries if I haven't seated him where he can see also. It's the repetitive nature of children's books and music that they love at such a young age, you'll be able to tell when she's interested and when she's DEFINITELY NOT. Make sure to find some "chew proof" books as well that way she can enjoy them in more than one way!

I would totally come to your book club if I lived in the area! I'm really starting to get into this reading thing my elementary school teachers seemed so jazzed about!

Except I'm kinda new at it so could we start with Olivia maybe? I have that one even! :)
