On A Whim

We (or perhaps here I should say, "I") have reached a magical point in parenthood.
I knew this moment was inevitable. I knew outings couldn't forever depend on detailed plans.
When I was considering the wonderful world of parenthood, no one explained to me that any venture into the outside world -- with or without baby -- would take extensive planning. Maybe it's because I'm neurotic ... so maybe it's just me.
Regardless, Lane comes home Friday to say he needs to make a last-minute trip to San Rafael and asked if Jane and I wanted to come.
OK.
Forty minutes later we're in the city and, since we're 15 minutes from San Francisco we think, maybe a little excursion into the city would be nice.
So we go. No planning. No time spent structuring feedings and naps around an outing. No diaper bag packing where I plan for practically every scenario.
After a walk around Fisherman's Wharf, ice cream at Ghirardelli's and a wonderful Thai dinner with friends, we came home.
It was the most spontaneous thing we've done in months. It was wonderful.
The only hitch was no socks for the baby when it was chilly outside. Diaper bag planning rears its ugly head.

Way to be Rachel. It's always by accident I end up doing exciting and fun things with the kids that I would never dream of doing otherwise, but it gives you courage for the future to try more stuff. That 5 month picture is beyond adorable - I hope I get to see you guys soon, probably Christmas, though.
