Last night, for the first time, I felt like a real adult. It's only taken 28 years.
You see, I hired my first babysitter.
I know what you're thinking. "But Jane's 9 months old. You've been housebound this long?" Of course not. I didn't become a shut-in when I gave birth. Merely, a loving family has watched her every time Lane and I have gone on a date. Twice I had a good friend watch her at their home.
But last night, I crossed the milestone. You know. I called a 15-year-old ahead of time. Did a list of Jane's routine. Did the minute of worrying when I left the home. And paid the babysitter at the end of the night.
When I exclaimed my jubilance at reaching the zenith of adulthood, Lane was incredulous.
Lane: "You didn't feel like an adult when you gave birth?"
Me: "No."
But now I do.

I only recently felt like an adult also. It was when Rich and I bought a real dining table. It has six chairs and everything. This was like three months ago......Almost of a decade of legal adulthood felt like nothing until a table came into my life. Not being married or having kids, being able to vote......it is a little weird. :o)
COngratulations! Maybe one day I will join you in this adult club.
you have many 'adult' deals to still go. . .but baby steps and that's great. . .isn't it fun doing all the grown up things and then realize, wait, I am the adult!
LOL. You're so funny girl. I'm gonna agree with you, I don't think it's hitting a milestone (aka-giving birth) that is supposed to snap you into adulthood. I think it just happens one day and you look at yourself and you finally say "wow, I'm probably too old for that". LOL.....I find myself doing that a lot now and I don't even have kids!
