The Greatest Halloween Tradition

Two words for you: Sugar cookies. Don't try to pretend like I'm not right. You and I both know that I am.
I love this skeleton key ornament, so I can only imagine I coupled my love for sugar cookies and the skeleton key deliberately when I made this countdown back in September.

Everything was from scratch on this front and, it needs to be said, my mother's sugar cookie recipe is the bomb dot com -- soft, thick, holds its shape, everything you could wish for in a sugar cookie.

The kids and I (read: I) were so excited about the upcoming "decorate Halloween cookies" activity, that we ventured out several weeks ago in search of the perfect Halloween shapes. We found pumpkins, cat, spider webs and a Pacman-esque ghost. B-E-A-utiful. Here's some of the final cookies. I can't profess to be a decorating master, simply a master baker (that's me bragging).
Of course, Jane's idea of decorating was to eat straight from the candy bowls and pick off the sprinkles one at a time as Lane attempted to help her finish the creation.
Elliot went basic and being much too sophisticated for use of a knife, simply utilized his fingers.
Lane's master piece took a lot of time and practice.

And this was my baby:

Say what you will, but sugar cookies covered in frosting and topped with M&M's on every square inch is the best way to eat this fabulous Halloween treat. Period.
Being halfway into this 13-day countdown adventure, I have to say, it's been totally worth it. Maybe it has been a little more work, but then I'm getting to do all those things I wish we did every holiday season and never got around to. And even Jane -- at 2-years-old -- looks forward to every morning when we turn the ornament over.
Worth it. Totally worth it. If not for the kids, then for this awesome sugar cookie.

Can you share the recipe or is that a family secret? Does the dough have to be refrigerated?

Aaaa! I made sugar cookies the day before, and posted on them (including recipes) the day after! (About how wonderful sugar cookies are during the holidays, etc., etc.) But my recipe is different. Very good though.

We are, truly, sisters.
