Management

I recently read an article where Tina Fey spoke of her 5-year-old daughter and how she (the daughter) was the boss.

"Anyone who will barge into the room while you are on the commode is the boss of you. And when you explain to them that you're on the commode and that they should leave but they don't? That's a high-level boss."

I laughed until my sides hurt and thought, "can't you lock the door against the intruder?"

But then karma came knocking and I've learned, again, not to judge.

In my own home, I've recently had to quit locking the bathroom door against my small, impatient employers to prevent permanent damage being done to the outside of the door.

You see, I was locking. But Jane began violently rattling the knob until I could see screws coming loose. Her brother? He took to finding some kind of object (his favorite being his drum sticks or cars) and pummeling them against the door while he screeched.

I tried to explain to them that this was inappropriate.

But they threatened to fire me.

They may depend on me for food and to clean away their dirty messes, but they have me under the tiny, adorable thumbs.

I really wanted to read that article, but apparently you have to be a subscriber to The New Yorker in order to do it. Which you are, apparently. Articulating that your "boss" has access to you even in the most compromised of situations--Tina Fey is brilliant.

As are you. I'm so glad you've posted more frequently. I'll try to return the favor.
