My Good Deed

I feel as though some ancient form of vengeance will be brought down upon my head if I do not share this recent find of mine.

Really, it's not my find. It was my sister-in-law's -- and I will be eternally grateful to her for bringing this shining beacon of chocolathood into my life.

Those who know me know I am somewhat of a chocolate junkie. For me, chocolate milk is a daily staple (we're talking a large glass here) and would never in any realm be considered a sweet treat, merely breakfast.

Knowing this, I tell you: I have three desserts in my life which have crowning glory. This Chocolate Trifle is one. (The other two: Rum Chocolate Cake found by Katie's father-in-law (aka Bill) and The Thing from Katie's father-in-law (still Bill. As a side note: Bill is my chocolate guru.).)

It is that good.

I had it for the first time 5 weeks ago and have dreamt about it nightly since.

So when my sis-in-law asked me to make dessert for tonight's Sunday dinner, I replied: "Sure. Then I'll need your Chocolate Trifle recipe."

I pray I made it like her's. I'll cry if I fail. Big. Fat. Tears.

Being generous and seeking out good karma for myself, I am going to share. I'll put the original recipe and my sis-in-law's alterations in italics next to it.

I'm giving the original measurements, but my sis-in-law doubles this, as I did.

1 19.8-ounce package brownie mix (Ghiradelli Double Chocolate brownies)
1 3.9-ounce package instant chocolate pudding mix
1/2 C water
1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
1 8-ounce container frozen whipped topping, thawed (this is a little sweet, so my SIL simply uses whipping cream and doesn't add anything to it, simply whipping the cream with the beaters)
1 12-ounce container frozen whipped topping, thawed (Vanilla-flavored Cool Whip, except I couldn't find that, so I got plain. I'll let you know how that works out)
1 bar chocolate candy (bag of Heath Bar bits)

Prepare brownie mix according to package directions and cool completely. Cut into 1-inch squares.

In a large bowl, combine pudding mix, water and sweetened condensed milk. Mix until smooth, then fold in 8 ounces of whipped topping (the beaten whip cream) until no streaks remain.

In a trifle bowl or glass serving dish, place half the brownies, half the pudding mixture and half the 12-ounce container of whipped topping (top with Heath bar bits). Repeat layers.

Refrigerate 8 hours before serving.

You can thank me later.

I want. Only 9 more months and I can have milk again (unless a miracle happens and the boy can take it before then).

P.S. I will be telling Bill how much you idolize his chocolate picks. I'm sure he'll be flattered (if also unsurprised :)).
