My children have always been excellent eaters.
Lately, as they have become toddlers, they have put a ban on fruits and vegetables. They still eat them, but not with the consistency that they used to and not nearly enough to satisfy an obsessed mommy who continues to keep a running tally of the food pyramid in her mind.
From birth, my children have been fanatical about their bananas.
Bananas were a must in our household. To not have bananas was akin to not having milk -- a true grocery emergency.
Until Jane hit 2 or so (true toddler). Then she stopped eating bananas. However, by that time, Elliot had long ago joined the Banana Cult she had formed and insisted on a morning banana, so the yellow fruit remained paramount in out lives.
Until about 3 months ago (2-years-old, again) when he stopped eating the banana.
Out of habit, I kept buying the fruit and I do not want to admit to the number of ripened bananas sitting in my freezer waiting for me to gather the energy to make banana bread.
A few days ago, a miracle occurred.
Jane spontaneously asked for a banana -- the first time in a year and a half.
So I gave her one, but she got to eat it "like a big girl" (you know, whole and with the peel -- instead of cut up into cubes).
It was like magic. Suddenly I had two children begging for bananas, but only if they could eat it like a big kid.
At the grocery store yesterday, it was Armageddon until they both got to grasp their own bunch of bananas for checkout.
And thus the banana has been reborn.
And, miracle of miracles, with the rebirth of the banana, the kids have begun to eat all their fruits and vegetables again -- with consistency (for THREE days now).
It's a good day for the food pyramid.

You mean to tell me my now 2-year-old might suddenly turn from her excellent eating ways and become one of those picky eaters?! Oh, great! Something to look forward to, eh. But I can see there is hope. Apparently they eventually return to their good eating ways. :)
I hate to break it to you but you are behind the curve. The food pyramid is out. You'll need to look for the food plate. Don't ask me what it is. I was so disgusted with the news that I couldn't stomach studying it. Get my little joke? It's in bad taste, I know. I kill myself.
I love hearing the escapades of your children and this one brought a smile to me, especially the pictures. Your children are good eaters, so I am glad they are back in the banana club.
