- I didn't hear it when someone took a rock and smashed the driver's side window of the truck in the driveway. They were there long enough to steal the MP3 player, my temple bag and who knows what else. I've been in the house all day and didn't hear anything. The dog didn't even bark. Fabulous.
- About a month ago, DMV sent me mail that, through the window, appeared to be the new title I had just gone in to get. I never opened it because I assumed that's what it was. Today (as a result of the car break in), Lane needed the envelope. This is when we found out it was a notice letting us know they needed more information. So I guess that's not something I did today, but it was discovered today -- and Lane was none too pleased with me for neglecting the envelope.
So, now that I'm done playing the world's smallest violin, I will tell you of my triumph. I made Pulla (a Finnish sweet bread) today in celebration of Christmas! Hooray! AND, to make things even better, the bread rose (the last two times I've made bread, inexplicably, I've killed the yeast).
If you'd like to make your own Pulla (highly recommended) here is how:
1/4 C water
1 T yeast
2 C milk
3/4 C sugar
1 1/2 t salt
6 to 7 C flour
1 1/2 t heaping cardamom
1 cube melted butter
2 eggs
2 eggs
You'll want to microwave your butter and milk for about 3 minutes. Put that in the mixer and add your sugar, salt, cardamom and 1 C flour. Mix. Add eggs. Mix in another 1 to 2 C of flour. If you'd like, proof your yeast (get water luke warm, add the yeast and about 1 t of sugar, mix and let sit for 3 to 5 minutes). Add yeast mixture to dough. Mix in remaining flour.
Knead the dough and let rise.
Once dough rises, cut dough into four equal parts (or just two if you want really big loaves). Cut each part into 3 ropes. Braid three ropes to make 4 loaves and place on cookie sheets.
Let loaves rise. Brush on egg and sprinkle sugar on raised loaves.
Bake 18 to 20 minutes at 375.
Glaze while hot.

First off ... that bread looks amazing!
And ... I totally feel your pain, thoughts of stupidity and anger over your breakin!
Even though the brick being thrown through my car window as I slept woke up both me and my dog, I didn't think anything of it ... until I went to go to work that morning! Devastation!!
Keep in mind that some 6 weeks earlier my purse had been stolen out of my house. I had just replaced everything -- Driver's License, SS Card, Credit Cards, Cell Phone, Palm Pilot etc -- and it was all in my purse which was sitting in the car!! I was victim again and felt like I had a giant TARGET on my house and car!
Funny how your temple bag was stolen, because my scripture tote was a victim of my breakin, too.
Then, to add insult to injury, almost exactly a year later my car was broken into when Angie and I took a quick trip to SLC to see Miss Saigon. This time I think I accidentally left the car unlocked. Missing this time: My cell phone (victim of all three incidents), car stereo and more than 100 CDs! They didn't want Angie's old school cell phone or my Christina Aguilera CD ... they tossed those aside. haha! It was a LONG drive home to St. George with no music to listen to!
So I totally feel your pain!!! But at least your bread turned out fabulous!!

On a different note ... I just put in my order for a Cameo Florist Cheeseball and plan to call in my order for a Sour Cream Lemon pie at Crowshaw's as we prep for the King Family Christmas in St. George! Yipee!!!
I hope you have an amazing Christmas!
