I have had a serious hankering for cake as of late. Not just any cake, but cake from scratch.
So, of course, I have turned to my favorite authorities on the subject of cooking -- the brilliant minds behind the The Test Kitchen cookbook and Cook's Country magazine.
First, I had Lane's company potluck Friday. Not just any potluck, but one where a winning dish would be selected.
We decided on carrot cake.

And, I don't want to brag (but I'm going to), the cake was a huge hit. Unfortunately, it fell to second place thanks to a little work-type nepotism. Still, almost all who ate the cake voted for it and I was proud of my little cake. Best of all, five pieces returned home with Lane.

Then, Friday night, we had some fabulous friends come for dinner.
Of course, I had to make another cake.
This time it was triple-layer chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting.
Again, I'm not going to lie, it was pretty good. Heavy, but good.

But now I have a huge problem: A bunch of cake begging to be consumed and a shocking pregnancy weight gain to deal with.
What do I do?
We're going to my sister-in-law's tomorrow, cake in hand, where I can only hope her five children will help relieve the cake pressure.

Oh the temptations. Everything sugar tastes amazing when pregnant, heck even when your not pregnant. Good luck getting the kids to eat it. All the cakes do look really yummy.
I plan on making a lemon cake from that very cookbook for Sunday dinner. I hope it turns out. It was that or carrot cake. Summer taste buds won out :)
Your fabulous friends agree, the cake was amazing, as was the dinner! We MUST do it again! :)
I too love cake from scratch. Sometimes I overfrost the layers (because I LOVE frosting) and it falls all over the place.
I still eat it.
I've made cakes from scratch. I prefer th box ones though. They always seem to taste better. Maybe you should post some of those good recipes of yours.
Chocolate with peanut butter frosting? My two favorite things ever! I wish you could Fed Ex a piece right on up here. (I'm with you on the pregnancy weight gain).
Why share when you can keep it in the fridge and nibble on it all week?
